Evaluating Foreign Medical Schools for Yourself

For over 20 years, Americans who either can't get into US medical or osteopathic schools or due to being older/nontraditional students, have gone offshore to attend medical school. Some also do it by choice.   Before you do it have you compared your scores and the possibility of getting into a US school?

This web site's goal is to provide a group of links to make it easier for students to look at schools, the process, and make informed decisions on the schools. There have been attempts in the past to evaluate foreign medical schools but this has been met with skepticism of the goals of the person doing the evaluation so I decided to put up this site. I have NO personal links to any of the schools and urge you to make informed personal decisions after considering all of the data you can make.

Criteria:  I suggest that you evaluate the schools by looking at the websites, checking to see if they are recognized in the country where they are located, that they are WHO recognized, talk to your local medical licensing board to see if your school is recognized in your preferred state, and talking to graduates of their programs. You can find graduates in residencies by going to www.yahoo.com and typing in (insert school name graduate) and sifting through the search results. Some websites of the schools list their graduates also. Also consider the safety and convenience of the location of the school. You can visit the US govt. site that describes safety in these countries. Check out travel costs by going to Travelocity. The discussion groups at ValueMd are useful tools.

For the average American or Canadian most will end up choosing a school in the Carib./Central America :

Antigua
Belize
Cayman Islands
Costa Rica
Dominica
Dominican Republic
Grenada
Montserrat
Netherland Antilles
St. Kitts and Nevis
St. Lucia
St. Vincent
Trinidad

or Mexico due to the close location to their homes but some do go to Indian schools, Australian schools, UK Schools , Russian, Czech, Israeli, Polish or Hungarian schools. Two schools, one chartered in Senegal and one in Uganda, teach their students in the United Kingdom.

Wherever you choose to go, be sure you check that the school has graduates who have licensed in the state you are interested in, is WHO recognized, are not 'correspondence schools' and can get you into the training you wish. This will be a work in progress so check back for updates. You are embarking on a most interesting project and careful planning is needed.

Good luck!!!!
